Empathy and Appreciation for the Unique Differences that Come with Race, Ethnicity Nationality, and Gender
Interview Questions
How did you and your family come to live in the US?
How has your family life today changed from what it used to be growing up?
What is your typical family dinner?
Most participants I interviewed were African Americans and a handful of White people. One of the participants stated that they were originally from South Africa and moved to the US because their father had a White friend who invited him to work with him on a project. He eventually invited his family and settled there.
Consistently growing up, his family used to have specific roles for a specific gender. For instance, His mother used to manage household affairs, and his father used to cater to the finances. His sisters used to help her with the house chores while he used to help his father tame the field and look after the domestic animals. He also stated that when they came to the US, his mother could now go to work and help his father with the finances, which she hadn’t done before. He had to learn to cook, clean the house, and care for his younger siblings. Their typical dinner entailed meat, cornmeal, greens, and sometimes beans.
What he learned about differences that surprised him most was how blacks were treated differently from whites in the US. For instance, he stated that he faced discrimination while finding a school to enroll in. He stated that some people were enrolled in certain schools, whereas others with the same credentials were denied the same chance. According to the participant, he understood that his school grades were good. Therefore, he thought he would enroll in a good school and meet new friends from other racial backgrounds like his father. However, he said that his father had difficulty finding him a good school because of the color of his skin.
