Tools for Virtual Teamwork
The monitor, your sense of purpose tool, is used to evaluate an employee’s role in an organization. This tool evaluates how employees interact with virtual team members and the organization (DeRosa & Lepsinger, 2010). Scores 1 to 3 are used to value the questions provided to assess the level of an employee’s interaction. The assessment would enable an employee to identify areas of his strengths and weaknesses. The checklist for the virtual teamwork tool is used to verify that the required items for virtual teamwork are in place before a project commences (DeRosa & Lepsinger, 2010). Verification would include systems, processes, and people. For example, the technology in use should support virtual teamwork, and employees should be skilled in virtual teamwork.
Under the Monitor Your Sense of Purpose tool, there are four sections of evaluation: the organization, relationship to the organization, self, and relationship to others (DeRosa & Lepsinger, 2010). All sections had a score of 3; I do this frequently.
The 3-score meant that all that is required from an employee to the organization and virtual team members was done frequently. This is important in ensuring that virtual teams meet their goals, creating a positive ripple effect on the organization’s overall performance. The selections were made because they represented what is required for successful virtual teamwork.
Under the checklist for virtual teamwork tool, details on processes, systems, and people were verified to ensure that all the required items were set before starting on a virtual teamwork project. To start a project, the required system infrastructure must be in place (DeRosa & Lepsinger, 2010). For example, a system that supports virtual teamwork must be used. This would include items like Microsoft Teams or Team Viewer software.
For a project such as software development with a virtual team, the people involved must be skilled in software development, specifically the programming language(s) used for the project. Presentations on the software’s or end product requirements would be discussed via video conference by the virtual team to ensure that team members are up to speed. This selection explains why systems, processes, and people are important to virtual teamwork.
Based on the two tools evaluated for virtual teamwork, it is important to use the tools because they directly impact the performance of a virtual team. The monitor, your sense of purpose tool, ensures that all employees have a good relationship with the organization and fellow virtual teammates. The checklist for the virtual teamwork tool ensures that all the required items for a virtual project are in place before a project starts.
