Technological advancements have led to the rise of different technologies embraced differently in society. One of the technologies that have raised controversy is Artificial Intelligence because of its positive and negative impact on society. Kaplan (2016) defines artificial intelligence as the engineering and science of developing intelligent machines that can complete tasks like human beings. Artificial intelligence has been gradually infiltrating different sectors by transforming the tasks that machines can complete with no or limited human intervention. The infiltration has led to the perception that Artificial Intelligence is a disruptive technology that touches different aspects of human life. According to Smith (2022), disruptive technology is an innovation that significantly alters how industries, businesses, or consumers operate. Disruptive technologies alter habits and systems through their superior attributes. Various types of Artificial Intelligence, such as limited memory, reactive machines, and the theory of self-awareness and the mind, can be employed in creating a disruptive technology that favors business growth. Modern businesses require functional, interactive, text, analytical, and visual artificial intelligence. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence is a disruptive technology needed in every aspect of human life that will significantly change how businesses, societies, and businesses function.

Artificial Intelligence as a Disruptive Technology

According to Roe (2018), artificial intelligence has transformed the customer care, agriculture, healthcare, energy and mining, manufacturing, intellectual property, IT service management, retail, technical support, and transport sectors. Artificial Intelligence is being applied through predictive analytics and robotics in the agriculture sector. Autonomous robots are being programmed to complete routine agricultural tasks. For instance, robots are used in large-scale crop harvesting to replace human labor. Artificial Intelligence is also being applied in soil and crop monitoring to ensure that crops are healthy and determine the effectiveness of the fertilizers and chemicals used on the farm. Predictive analytics is also applied in agriculture to predict crop yield based on weather changes. Figure 1 below summarizes the main uses of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture.

Artificial Intelligence has been attributed to the loss of jobs in different sectors. For example, the application of Artificial Intelligence in customer care is among the main disruptions that have led to massive job loss. Call centers are focusing on using artificial intelligence, which is leading to a loss of jobs for call agents. The impact of Artificial intelligence on jobs is different in different sectors. According to Crosman (2018), approximately 12 million people working in the lending and banking industries will lose their jobs due to Artificial Intelligence by 2030, as indicated in Figure 2 below.

Automated messages and bots positively impact businesses by enabling them to prompt responses to customer inquiries, thus maintaining good customer relations. For instance, Artificial Intelligence Software is used to listen to calls and analyze their effect on customers’ purchasing behavior and shopping experience. Therefore, businesses can leverage Artificial Intelligence to create customer loyalty by using customer insights gathered from analyzing calls to develop products and services that meet customers’ needs and preferences.

The application of Artificial Intelligence in the healthcare sector is among the main trends that have contributed to the growth of the healthcare sector. Artificial Intelligence in healthcare includes user-friendly chatbots and bots to help patients with health diagnoses and perform operations more precisely than humans. Artificial Intelligence is also being used to predict disease, identify high-risk patients, automate diagnostic tests, and increase the accuracy and speed of treatment. Artificial Intelligence in healthcare is anticipated to continue changing due to opportunities in areas such as drug formulation, DNA analysis, and predictive care. The application of artificial intelligence in energy and mining includes using smart electric grids to increase efficiency in delivering energy and predicting failure in the equipment used in energy production and mining. Therefore, the energy sector is being disrupted by Artificial Intelligence and machine learning due to their role in reducing mining and energy production costs.

Intellectual property is gaining significance in business due to the need for innovation to maintain a competitive advantage. Artificial Intelligence technologies, patents, demand for intellectual property, and copyrights drive the innovation sector. Big data analytics and Artificial Intelligence, such as blockchain technologies, are vital in addressing the challenges linked to intellectual property development. Artificial Intelligence protects the technology data and code created by a business from unauthorized reproduction and access through digital locks. Therefore, businesses can freely innovate and publicize innovations to enhance business growth and increase competitive advantage. For example, sectors such as telecommunication and manufacturing are taking advantage of innovation protection to innovate. Artificial Intelligence is gaining prominence in manufacturing due to its effectiveness in optimizing assembly lines. Many manufacturing industries use Artificial Intelligence to plan, manufacture, and test products to meet quality requirements. Artificial Intelligence is also being used in augmented decision-making to improve operations within the manufacturing sector. In the telecommunications sector, Artificial Intelligence is being applied to integrate chatbots and voice assistants to answer customer questions.

Artificial Intelligence is gradually dominating the IT service management sector by improving the use of technology in homes and business premises. Artificial Intelligence has disrupted the IT service management segment through automated backend processes, Point of Entry, and knowledge management. It also increases self-service through automated messaging and personal assistants. Sectors such as the retail industry are using Artificial Intelligence chatbots to increase the amount of customer data collected to create a competitive advantage. The chatbots collect data through digital requests from customers using various eCommerce platforms. Therefore, retail companies rely on Artificial Intelligence to increase conversion capabilities, get access to intelligent data, effectively analyze customer data, capture customers’ reactions by capturing their moods and emotions, and predict emotions based on customer experience, thus enhancing customer loyalty through personalized customer experience.

The application of Artificial Intelligence in technical support is evident in the use of voice assistants that answer questions. The voice assistants are programmed to offer specific answers to frequently asked questions about a company’s products or services to reduce the costs incurred in hiring and retaining customer service agents. Artificial intelligence applications in the transport industry have raised concerns because the technology will replace many workers, increasing unemployment (Kumar & Shahzad, 2020). For example, autonomous self-driving cars will replace drivers, as indicated in Figure 3 below. Therefore, there has been a lag in the application of artificial intelligence in the transport industry.

Despite the negative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the transport industry, the technology is being encouraged due to its positive impact on transportation. For example, Artificial Intelligence increases reliability and safety and reduces environmental pollution. Therefore, there is still a possibility that Artificial Intelligence will be fully embraced in the transport industry, especially in private transportation.
