Jonah complex- The fear of growth Journal of Humanistic Education & Development
My vision for my greatest self is to live a life true to myself and be able to experience the life I will live in the realness of life itself. However, I am living toward reaching that vision. Based on my current way of life, I can certainly say I live a life way below my potential. Not because I do not think I am worthy of living up to my life’s potential, but because I have lived my life as per society’s expectations and what the people around me think is good for me.
I have high personality traits of agreeableness. These personality traits have influenced how social expectations define me and how I live my life. From philosophical and psychological perspectives, properties of social and individual behavior and relations within contact groups and communities are shaped by social expectations (Khmil & Popovych, 2019). The Jonah Complex involves individuals evading actualizing their potentialities make great achievements in life (Hoffman & Bey, 2021). I have so far lived a life conforming to what society defines as right. I avoid following my life’s vision as I feel it would offend the people around me and appear offensive, self-absorbed, unemphatic, or rebellious to what is considered normal.
The impact of the Jonah Complex can be experienced at the self-actualization stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. At this level, an individual is more focused on the realization and actualization of the potential and fulfilling their life’s goals. The Jonah Complex, at this point, can stop them from this realization and fulfillment of their vision for a great life. For example, a person may be working as a medic because their family decided, but they would wish to pursue a career in computer systems development and travel the world. However, they can not follow their desires since it would offend the family.

Describe Maslow’s theory that he called the Jonah Complex and compare and contrast it with the fear of failure. What is your vision of your greatest self? Are you reaching for that vision or have you been living a life below your potential, simply because you do not think you are worthy or capable of the greatness you see? How might this be related to your personality and the Jonah complex? Explain where, on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, you would expect to see the impact of the Jonah Complex. Provide an example to show your viewpoint.
