The Use of Theory
The topic for the proposal is “Suicide Awareness and Prevention among Non-Serving Veterans.” The proposed research will focus on defining how non-serving veterans perceive suicide and their susceptibility to commit suicide, the beliefs non-serving veterans hold regarding veteran support programs, and engaging in such programs, and determine whether creating suicide awareness among non-serving veterans can prevent and reduce incidences of suicide among non-serving veterans.
The proposed research will adopt a cause-effect design that creates various types of variables. In this case, suicide awareness becomes the independent (predictor) variable, while the prevention of suicide among non-serving veterans becomes the dependent (outcome) variable. The non-serving veterans’ perception of suicide and their susceptibility to suicide become the mediating variables, while the beliefs of the non-serving veterans on suicide and support programs become the moderator variables.
The proposed research will make use of The Health Belief Model (HBM). According to the HBM, an individual’s motivation for healthy behavior is determined by their individual perceptions, modifying factors, and the likelihood of action (Mckellar & Sillence, 2020). The theory will be incorporated into the proposed research in the modeling of the causal relationship between suicide awareness and the prevention of suicide among non-serving veterans and the interrelationships between the variables and other mediating and moderating variables.
Social science theory provides a realistic perspective of observable facts on various aspects of life, such as individual and population behaviors, culture, and community problems. The theory is applied in research to explain individual and collective everyday behaviors and help explain and develop solutions to common human behavioral problems.
An example of how participatory social justice theory is used in mixed methods research is when studying whether a racially diversified police force can prevent and reduce police brutality towards minority races and the minority races’ perception of the police.
