Biopsychosocial Assessment
Clinicians perform biopsychosocial assessments where they evaluate a patient’s social, biological, and psychological aspects of a patient’s life (Tripathi et al., 2022). A biopsychosocial assessment is crucial in determining the precipitating factors for a patient. The order in which a clinician asks a patient questions during a biopsychosocial assessment is crucial and affects the patient’s openness and honesty when answering the questions (Mohamad et al., 2022). The order of the questions impacts clinicians’ ability to better assess, diagnose, manage, and treat their patients (Chand et al., 2022).
The initial assessment in a biopsychosocial interview is the biological questions (Tripathi et al., 2019). Biological questions help the clinician understand a patient’s medical history. A clinician must learn about a mental health history right at the beginning of the interview. The questions in this section include the patient’s past and present medical history, surgical history, history of substance abuse, personal and family history of mental health, known drug allergies, and past and present medications. A biological assessment also focuses on a patient’s general information, such as age, diet, hormones, sleep habits, genes, and physical traumas. The second phase of a biopsychosocial assessment focuses on psychological factors (Tripathi et al., 2019).
Psychological assessment helps a clinician to understand the impact of psychological factors on a patient’s mental health. This section of the interview focuses on the patient’s psychological traumas, personality, suicidal ideation, stress, reaction to illness, and stress. A clinician can better understand a patient’s psychological factors by asking the patient to describe themselves, understanding the patient’s goals for therapy, and understanding the patient’s weaknesses and strengths. The last phase of a biopsychological assessment focuses on a patient’s social factors (Tripathi et al., 2019). The clinician asks questions to understand the patient’s marital status, religion, culture, financial situation, educational background, sexual history, living situation, work history, and family.
