A relevant article to my career is titled ‘Trends in Sedentary Behavior Among the US Population’ and authored by Yang, L., Cao, C., Kantor, E. D., Nguyen, L. H., Zheng, X., Park, Y., Giovannucci, E. L., Matthews, C. E., Colditz, G. A., & Cao, Y. Yang et al. (2019) evaluated sedentary behavioral patterns across the US population from 2001 through 2016. The article identifies the lifestyle changes across the US over the period studied and links such sedentary behaviors to increased chronic disease comorbidities and mortality. The article concluded that sitting while watching TV or videos for over two hours has increased across the US, especially among adolescents and adults. The authors applied various statistical procedures, including median values, test-retest reliability, intraclass correlation coefficients, percentiles, linear regression, regression coefficients, logistic regressions, and multivariable regression models.
The research question was, “What were the levels and changes of sedentary behaviors among the US population from 2001 through 2016?” The variables used include sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, race, annual household income, educational attainment, weight, and physical capacity. Other variables include time and lifestyle.
The article has tables and charts. Also, the authors used 100% stacked lines with markers charts. The charts helped me better understand the information presented. This is because the charts well presented the changes in lifestyles and compared the changes across sociodemographics over the years. This article can be helpful in my future career as it clearly explains the process of statistical analysis and drawing conclusions on population behavior from collected and analyzed data.
