Oxygenation and Physiological Needs

Oxygenation and Physiological Needs

The basic care and comfort needs encompass physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs. Nutritional support is the next priority after oxygenation. This intervention is particularly beneficial to clients who cannot get sufficient nutrition due to loss of appetite, disease severity, and other pathologies that disrupt feeding. The basis of nutritional support is the significance of nutrition in healing and addressing physiologic needs. According to (Hill et al., 2021), nutritional support is integral to care processes and informs on the prognosis of the underlying pathology. It is, therefore, one of the top priorities in basic care.

Changes in health status directly employ a nutritional support approach in basic care. Poor patient prognosis and disease severity often impact the client’s ability to feed. As the client’s condition deteriorates, their feeding ability also decreases, prompting assisted nutrition. Medical nutritional therapy is used in intensive care units to provide nutritional support to seriously ill clients (Hill et al., 2021). This approach is targeted at avoiding malnutrition and preventing further deterioration of the client’s health condition. A positive change in the client’s health status may inform the need to shift from parenteral feeding to enteral feeding.

Nurses play an integral role in nutritional support. Their role in this regard is to provide nutritional screening to their clients and offer appropriate nutritional advice to these clients. Their contact time with the clients also enables them to identify nutritional problems that the client is manifesting and address them appropriately. Nurses also implement feeding protocols for their clients and establish and monitor parenteral feeding devices on the clients (Boeykens, 2021). These roles require that the nurse have evidence-based nutritional support knowledge to ensure optimal nutritional care outcomes.
