Integrated Health Care Models

Integrated Health Care Models

Integrated health care, or interprofessional health care, is an approach or a method encompassing great collaboration and good communication between healthcare providers (Willard, 2022)—for example, a partnership between a medical doctor, a nurse, and a psychiatrist. Integrated health care aims to provide patients with the best care by improving efficiency in service provision (“What is Integrated Health Care? | Queens University Online”, 2022). With an integrated healthcare system, care providers can attend to a patient’s biological, social, and psychological needs. Subsequently, several integrated healthcare models have been adapted in the medical field and have been very beneficial in ensuring that patients get holistic treatment.

Integrated health care models include multispecialty group practice with provider and payer health plans like Geisinger Health System or Kaiser Permanente, single entities with no health plan like Mayo Clinic, independent service providers sharing and coordinating health care services like physician-hospital organizations, and finally, independent providers facilitated by the government on local and state levels like Community Care of North Carolina, a public-private partnership. These models are very beneficial in that they ensure the provision of quality care to patients, ensure that services are easily accessible, help lower the general healthcare cost by cutting unnecessary medical tests and exams, and also help to prevent disintegration between healthcare providers, ensuring patients get the best care.

The integration of health care aided by the mentioned models has facilitated the proper sharing of information related to the patients amongst the professionals. Patient information sharing among the healthcare team ensures a holistic treatment approach in that the respective providers address the patient’s biological, social, and psychological needs. For example, a general doctor could collaborate with a nurse, a psychiatrist, and a medical social worker to treat a teenager admitted for drug withdrawal symptoms.
