School Violence
School violence can be described as violence involving youths that occurs on school grounds, during school events, or on the way to and from school. In addition, in most cases, a student or student is the victim, perpetrator, or witness of school violence acts, which include emotionally scarring acts, bullying, physical abuse like pushing and hitting, and other gang assaults. These violent behaviors could also involve weapons and often lead to injuries, some of them fatal. Sociology examines societies and social interactions so that theories of how behavior, in this case, school violence, is molded by group life and how, as a result, group life is affected by individuals (Kendall, 2020).

Through this sociological perspective, the question of whether negative parenting behavior, including child disrespect, maltreatment, and bullying, is the root cause of school violence can be analyzed. According to all sociological theories about human development, including symbolic interactionist, functional, and conflict approaches, social contact, especially in the early stages of life, plays a huge role in how individuals view the world and how they treat other people (Kendall, 2020). For most people, this initial social contact is with family, mostly parents, implying that when this contact is negative, filled with neglect, and such problems, the child’s development will be negatively affected. Studies by Lereya et al. (2013) and Zhang et al. (2022) confirmed that parenting behavior significantly affects whether a child becomes a bully. Rather than using punishment methods to stop school violence, preventative methods are much better. One of the best ways schools can prevent school violence is through school counselors; every school should have a professional counselor. One of the main roles of school counselors is to create safe school environments (Paolini, 2022). In addition, counselors are most likely to spot any children with problems at home that could, later on, lead to school violence and, as a result, start intervention approaches. Moreover, there are other innovative approaches that can be applied to stop school violence, like social emotional learning (SEL) (Fredrick et al., 2022). SEL is a preventative framework that focuses on teaching particular skills that encourage positive youth development.
