Impact of Policy Proposal on Communities

Impact of Policy Proposal on Communities

Various policy proposals affect individual communities in the U.S. differently. The chosen news article addresses the issue or policy of Stop the Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees (W.O.K.E.) Act. It is one of the legislative policy proposals that will offer employees, families, children, and businesses tools to fight back against the W.O.K.E program. This legislation will definitely have a significant impact because it will fight the critical Race Theory and W.O.K.E programs that cause division in schools and workplaces (Christen 1). The article demonstrates that Florida Governor DeSantis is determined to ban Critical Race Theory, a 1619 project within Florida schools.

The Stop W.O.K.E Act whose fundamental role is to restrain university professors, employers, and school teachers who offer training or education that may make learners or people feel guilt or discomfort about their gender, race, or sexuality (Christen, 1). To me, this law is decisively confusing and vague. First, the bill bans instruction that suggests that people feel anguish, guilt, or any form of psychological stress due to actions that people committed in the past by members of the same race. Thus, even as DeSantis spears it and believes it will be impactful, this law will have both positive and negative impacts. The positive impact is it will transform education and workplaces, but it will not do this effectively and completely stop racial labeling at work or in schools.

The negative effect of this law is that it is more of a cultural fight and targets the whites precisely. However, one would wonder from the way the law has been worded. It leaves employers and instructors wondering whether employees or students would sue them for stating or speaking something they disagree with. Thus, without any doubt, this law will openly attack freedom of speech. It will also force teachers and professors to think critically before teaching topics such as racism, and diversity, or engaging in controversial discussions or subjects with learners to avoid being sued. Therefore, in plain terms, the law permits learners and employees to sue their teachers and employers for discussing something that causes guilt. For example, a student could sue a teacher for talking about the effect of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Suppose the discussion makes these students feel psychological distress. However, I am still amazed whether anybody would take such a complaint seriously. Lastly, the Stope WOKE Act intends to ban marginalized groups from essential discussions in our communities, workplaces, or schools and even restrain people who deserve to exist proudly, and freely, and even share their stories or be heard.

During the fly-in, I learned that we have the power to control racial labels or tagging. There is no need to introduce the bill W.O.KE that will limit teachers, professors, and employees from expressing their ideas freely for fear of being sued. We can do this by embracing diversity and equality where we view people from other cultures as one of or as “Americans” rather than blacks, Hispanics, or Latinos. This means we can fight racial discrimination without enacting any bill.

While schooling, especially in pre-school, the teachings were more discriminative in that we did not mingle, play, or share seats with black American learners. As such, the black Americans or learners from other races felt uneasy learning. Some even absconded school for fear of intimidation as we could even ask others why their skin complexion differs from ours. This was so depressing, so to some extent, I feel banning the Critical Race Theory in school would help solve such minor issues of learners discriminating against each other. However, it will also cause negative effects like suing educators and limiting freedom of expression.
