Impact of Stress on Professional Communication: A Reflection

I have experienced how stress negatively affects professional communication. At one point, I was an intern as a store attendant. We would work a 12-hour shift that was so exhausting. From time to time, I would grow impatient with customers’ requests. I would sometimes keep to myself by ignoring the inquiries. It is not that I had an issue with a customer, but the exhaustion and stress affected my communication competence.

Addressing the Challenge

One of the most effective communication strategies in highly stressful situations is to have a planned conversation. Stressful situations at work are encountered daily. Having a planned conversation will enable one to know what to say, where, and when to say it (Strumska, 2013). The conversation may still be difficult amid the stress, but preparing ahead of time helps one to manage delivery.
