Comparison-Virtue Ethics, Utilitarianism, Kantianism and Pluralism

Comparison-Virtue Ethics, Utilitarianism, Kantianism and Pluralism

The primary difference between virtue ethics and utilitarianism, Kantianism, and pluralism is that the former focuses on the person acting while the latter focuses on the consequences of an action. Virtue ethics focuses on the right being over the right action. Nonetheless, virtue ethics and moral theories of action are not necessarily alternatives. Instead, they complement each other. Additionally, utilitarianism as an ethical theory states that actions are deemed correct if and only if they minimize the bad and maximize the good. Therefore, people’s actions are judged depending on the consequences of pleasure or pain (Boss, 2019). Unlike virtue ethics, which considers the doer of the action, the practical approach means people’s rightness or wrongness depends on what happens after their actions.

On the other hand, pluralism as a moral theory delves into tolerance in a diverse environment. Proponents of the theory aver that multiple versions of ‘wrong’ and ‘right’ may differ across different customs (Pain, 2019). For instance, in this era of global business, people from different cultures become colleagues. It is incumbent upon everyone to learn each other’s culture to avoid offending one another. What may be deemed a joke when Americans are conversing with one another may be offensive to a Japanese. If virtue ethics are applied in this case, colleagues would be required to follow standard behavior without consideration of the reality of multiculturalism.

Finally, Kantianism as a moral theory focuses on respecting people’s liberty rights, regardless of the consequences of not doing so. For instance, a boy who peeps on bathing ladies in a public bathroom violates their liberty rights. The girls are not hurt by the action as long as they do not realize it. The theory differs from virtue ethics because it refers to liberty rights, whereas virtue ethics refers to the universal good.

Discuss how virtue ethics is in tension with Kantianism, Utilitarianism, and pluralism. In other words, please consider how virtue ethics is compatible with these moral theories, but I also want you to describe how it contradicts them. Should we still think of ethics as a matter of virtue or not?
