12 Angry Men Film Analysis
The movie 12 Angry Men is set in an American courtroom. The movie’s storyline includes the interaction of 12 men on a jury as they debate the acquittal or conviction of a defendant who is only 18 years old and is facing a murder charge. The main characters observed in the selected scene are Lee J. Cobb, who acts as juror three, and Henry Fonda, who acts as juror eight. The two jurors have conflicting opinions, and juror three is convinced that the defendant is guilty. Juror three feels frustrated because other jurors are not responding to his arguments. His frustration leads to anger, but he eventually acknowledges that the defendant is not guilty (Movie Clips, 2015). Based on the occurrence of events in the scene, it is evident that juror three depicts aggression and conflict between him and other jurors who believe that the defendant is angry, while peacemaking is depicted by jury eight, who chooses not to respond to jury three’s objections.
Based on psychological concepts and theories, juror three accepts that the defendant is not guilty due to rethinking his arguments. Arguing helps him see the bigger picture to the point of persuading himself to accept the facts and arguments that other jurors may have presented. According to Muller Mirza et al. (2009), arguing helps individuals eventually make peace with reality when they realize they are no longer in control. This form of acceptance is called radical acceptance. Katz & Bellofatto (2018) argue that radical acceptance is founded on the assumption that suffering arises from an individual’s attachment to the pain. Therefore, in the movie scene, juror three accepts that the defendant is not guilty because of the attachment to the emotional pain felt for losing the argument.
