Instrumental Values
Instrumental values are a form of behavioural patterns that are not an end goal but a means to achieve the end goal. These instrumental values arise from one’s personality and character (Rønnow‐Rasmussen, 2002). One must be intelligent and broad-minded to be able to embrace these values. The top three instrumental values include open-mindedness, ambition, and capability. Being broad-minded refers to the willingness to consider other people’s ideas. On the other hand, ambition refers to one’s willingness to chase their dreams without ceasing. Finally, competence refers to effectiveness in whatever one does, from work to home-based tasks.
Fitness of These Instrumental Values in the Values Hierarchy
Instrumental values act as a conductor through which terminal values will be attained. In the hierarchy of values, broad-mindedness comes in the first place. It is followed by competence/effectiveness. Finally, ambition, which largely refers to one’s responsibility and push, comes third.
Significance of Top Three Instrumental Values on the Approach to Leadership
The values one holds affect their leadership abilities. For instance, an ambitious person will likely influence followers to pursue their goals. On the other hand, broad-mindedness is an essential value in leadership. Effective leaders are expected to listen to their juniors without prejudice (Rønnow‐Rasmussen, 2002). In addition, open-mindedness helps leaders gather diverse opinions, which is crucial to enhancing group performance. Finally, competence is core to successful leadership. Therefore, a good leader should be competent to act as an example and influence their followers.
Terminal Values
Terminal values are the goals people work towards and deem to be desirable. It is a way one hopes to lead one life; hence one hopes to achieve terminal values during or throughout their lifetime. Terminal values also denote the goals that people set for themselves (Tuuliket al., 2016). The top three terminal values include family security, world peace, and national security. The top three terminal values summarize what motivates people to do what they do. These terminal values emphasize what people value. Since the cardinal human instinct is self-preservation, people are likely to chase what they like.
Terminal Values Hierarchy
In terms of hierarchical ranking, family security comes first. That is because family is a pillar that manifests from childhood. Essentially, this is why people try to provide for and protect their families. Next in the hierarchical rank is the desire for national security, including protection against foreign attacks. Next is world peace, which helps people feel secure.
How Terminal Values Support Leadership
Terminal values play a significant role in enhancing leadership effectiveness. One notable contribution of terminal values is enhancing one’s moral development and ethical leadership (Głaz, 2014). These help people treat each other respectfully since they understand the importance of fairness and justice. Terminal values also reduce stress. For instance, when one commit to being there for their families, they have to make sacrifices. In return, their families support them when they are in need. Similarly, in an organizational setting, people can make friends and acquaintances who can help them when they are in need.
