Crime Control
Individual Crime Control Methods
Individual crime prevention methods border around the actions that individuals can undertake to reduce the chances of crime at home or the workplace. These methods can be enforced by communities, individuals, or partners. To select the best crime control measures for a specific premise, one should imagine they were the offender and implement strategies that keep them away. One of the crime prevention strategies is target hardening. Target hardening is about making it hard for an offender to access a platform they can steal from (West Yorkshire Police, 2019). For instance, hardening door locks will go a long way. Also, having secure passwords for online sites prevents hackers from accessing private data.
Another method of crime control is target removal. It is about making it hard for a potential offender to see one’s items (West Yorkshire Police, 2019). For instance, one should close their doors and windows properly to prevent potential thieves from seeing what is inside. Also, avoiding posting content that may reveal one’s location on social media is essential. Another way is to reduce the payoffs of a potential offense. That means reducing the likelihood that an offender will sell a property once they steal it (West Yorkshire Police, 2019). One way of achieving this is security marking property.
Why Guns Are Not an Effective Burglary Deterrent
According to Pappas (2015), evidence-based research in the US shows that guns are not an effective mechanism for preventing burglary. In any case, gun ownership is directly linked to an increase in armed robbery cases. The initial presumption was that an armed population could resist robbery encounters. However, the Second Amendment puts many guns in public hands, including the criminals themselves.
