Regulatory and Legal Compliance
Many regulations govern service delivery in healthcare. Healthcare organizations must follow these laws and regulations to ensure regulatory compliance (Dunbar et al., 2021). For organizations to achieve legal and regulatory compliance, they must implement strategies that ensure patient safety and protect the privacy of patients’ medical records. Healthcare managers must know the legal and regulatory framework to help me make operational decisions that comply with the requirements.
A healthcare manager must implement strategies and policies that will ensure regulatory compliance. These strategies will allow the organization to operate freely within the law. They must also develop policies and measures that meet the minimum requirements set by regulatory bodies. Compliance with the regulatory requirement is not an option since non-compliance can result in criminal and civil penalties (Dunbar et al., 2021). The primary healthcare law that sets measures for protecting protected health information privacy is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) (Theodos & Sittig, 2020). Healthcare managers must thus set measures and strategies to meet the requirements of this law. This may involve hiring a privacy officer to ensure HIPAA compliance.
Healthcare managers can develop a culture of transparency that will ensure their subordinates comply with legal requirements. The right to patient privacy is critical in healthcare since it is a safety issue. Regulatory requirements such as HIPAA require standards to be set to protect patient privacy.
A healthcare manager can hire a risk manager to set standards and policies that meet regulatory requirements. Healthcare managers will thus make decisions to ensure patient privacy is protected. This will include staff training disciplinary actions for staff members who do not comply with the regulatory requirements and conducting regular audits to check for vulnerabilities in their procedures and policies.
