Scholarly Activities

Overview

I attended rounds organized by the product review committee to assess device-related pressure injury cases. Device-related pressure injuries are common in the healthcare delivery industry (Galetto et al., 2019). The committee reviewed cases to see if the device-related pressure sores were avoidable. They also reviewed whether enough measures were taken to prevent these sores. These rounds happen every 3rd Thursday of the month. The activity benefits me by equipping me with knowledge on preventing device-related pressure sores.

Problem

Medical devices cause device-related pressure, increasing the risk of sepsis, cause pain, and increase the length of hospitalization and healthcare costs (Black & Kalowes, 2016). These pressure ulcers are a problem for patients and healthcare organizations. By participating in this committee review, a nurse can know the devices that are prone to causing pressure ulcers and strategies that can be used to prevent device-related pressure ulcers.

Solution

The scholarly activity proposed using the correct size of medical devices to fit the patient cushioning, protecting high-risk skin areas, moving devices, and daily skin assessment. Current clinical guidelines support these solutions since preventing device-related pressure injuries reduces and redistributes pressure ulcers over large areas and encourages patient mobility (Padula et al., 2017). The solutions will help to prevent the frequency and prevalence of pressure injuries in inpatient settings.

Opportunity

This scholarly activity allows a nurse to be equipped with the knowledge to manage medical device-related ulcers. The activity met the learning new knowledge and ways of effectively managing healthcare conditions. Attending this activity will help me grow as a nurse since it will allow me to implement evidence-based practices in my organization to prevent medical device-related pressure injuries.

Program Competencies Addressed

  1. Implement patient care decisions based on evidence-based practice.
  2. Utilize patient care technology and information management systems.
  3. Promote interprofessional collaborative communication with healthcare teams to provide safe and effective care.

Critical Appraisal of Quantitative Research

Throughout the RN-to-BSN program, students must participate in scholarly activities outside clinical or professional practice. Examples of scholarly activities include attending conferences, seminars, journal clubs, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdisciplinary committees, quality improvement committees, and any other opportunities available at your site, within your community, or nationally.

You must post at least one documented scholarly activity by the end of this course. In addition to this submission, you are required to be involved and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives regularly.
