Critical Appraisal of Quantitative Research

Critical Appraisal of Quantitative Research

Critical appraisal is the process of rigorously and methodologically analyzing a conducted study. It usually involves four phases (Donini et al., 2020). These phases are rapid critical appraisal, evaluation, synthesis, and recommendation. This essay focuses on a critical appraisal of an article focusing on patient improvement and improved patient safety. It seeks to point out the critical information left incomplete while looking at new knowledge provided and how it is critical for future critical appraisals of research. Area of Critical Appraisal Left Incomplete.

One area of the critical appraisal that I found incomplete was the research objectives, questions, hypotheses, and procedures section. The article identifies the research objectives as exploring nurses’ perceptions of patient involvement relating to patient safety based on nurses’ past experiences with patients (Skagerström et al., 2017). The other areas, including the hypotheses, questions, and procedures, are not addressed or adequately highlighted.

Area of Critical Appraisal Providing New Knowledge

The research section describing the research’s strengths and weaknesses provides new information. The strengths and weaknesses are not identified, but the critical appraisal adds that the research focused on interviewing nurses and nurses’ assistants directly, making the information gathered more reliable. Patients’ lack of medical knowledge, which would lead them to not participate in their safety plan during their hospital stay, was noted as a limitation.

Application of New Knowledge.

The strengths and limitations of the critical appraisal are some of the new knowledge gathered from this study. This knowledge will be critical in future critical appraisals. It will enable the critique to know the areas to focus on and address while critically appraising any research study. It will also highlight the patient of patient education while conducting such research that significantly affects them.
