Obesity Risk Factors
The major risk factors for obesity include:

Genetics leading to hereditary obesity as genes define how the human body how processes food into energy and stores fat
A history of weight gain, meaning it is easy for an individual to gain weight
Sedentary lifestyles including lifestyle choices and low levels or no activity

Waist measurement-Waist to hip ratio (Lopez-Jimenez & Miranda, 2010)
Physical observation
Progression of Obesity
Obesity is a progressive disease. This means weight gain leads to more weight gain.
Weight gain affects hormonal, metabolic, and molecular changes risking further body fact accumulation (ASMBS, 2017).
Treatment and Management of Obesity
Although obesity can be treated through medical procedures such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, gastroplasty, sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, changes in lifestyle are the most viable methods. Obesity can be treated and managed by using a multi-sectoral approach. This includes the individual and the community. The individual responsibility is basic in the management and treatment of obesity. The community level provides support for individuals dealing with obesity.
At the individual level, people can:
Manage their desires towards intake of unhealthy foods
Limiting the intake of high-energy foods such as fatty and sugary foods
Increasing the consumption of healthy diets, including fruits, whole grains, and vegetables
Getting physically active
At the community level:
Providing support to shape lifestyle choices
Awareness of healthy foods
At the government level:
Providing accessible spaces for physical activity
Formulating and implementing community-based policies and food-related policies
Restrictive marketing policies of foods high sugar and fatty foods for children and adults
Food and beverage responsibilities include:
Reduction of fat and sugar in processed foods
Providing honest nutritional information on processed foods
Promoting healthy food choices

Potential Complications of Obesity
An increase in BMI is a pathophysiology factor of fatal non-communicable diseases. Obese people have an increased risk of health conditions and complications, including:
Cardiovascular health conditions, especially heart disease and stroke (Hamjane et al., 2020)
Musculoskeletal disorders such as degenerative disease of joints due to overweight
Diabetes mellitus and cancers such as pancreatic cancer (Pothuraju et al., 2018)
Obesity is closely associated with the development of metabolic disorders and immune responses (Hamjane et al., 2020).
Obesity during childhood is a risk factor for obesity during adult life. Childhood obesity has also been linked to increased chances of premature death and disabilities during adulthood (Rito et al., 2019). The risk of premature death in obese children is linked to the increased risks of cardiovascular complications, insulin resistance, and the psychological effects of obesity (Rito et al., 2019). Disability risks are associated with the risk of bone fragility and fractures.
