Policing Strategies

Part 1: Targeting Policing Strategies

In America, the number of deaths by gunfire has over the years significantly increased. According to crime statistics in 2010, of the total reported homicide cases, 8,775 involved the use of a firearm. This statistic suggests that every hour, there is a death due to gunfire. With many individuals in the public gaining approval from the state to own guns, it is difficult for the authorities to curb the growing trend of misuse of these weapons by the public. With occurrences such as the Colorado mass shooting, there has been a need for the police department to strategize on ways to mitigate gun violence in the state. Focused deterrence mandates police officers to focus on groups that pose high risks of participating in gun-related crimes. This approach, however, has been viewed as discriminatory (Braga & Papachristos, 2014) since the authorities seem to be concerned about the minority groups living in areas prone to gangs who use guns. For instance, high response levels to gun-related crimes should be a priority for the police force. With the high response, the crime perpetrators can be easily tracked down and arrested. Strict gun-owning policies can also eradicate public misuse of weapons by reducing their availability to the public. Targeting deterrence strategies can be useful in tracking down human traffickers and drug cartels since these are organized crimes that need more policing efforts compared to other crimes (Felbab-Brown, 2013). Part 2: Compstat and Cleveland Gang Prevention Program

With the growing rate of gang-related violence in Cleveland in the late 1980s, the then police authority noted a fascinating trend linked to the crimes (Ross, 2013). For instance, there was an increase in gang graffiti, which coincided with the arrival of cocaine in the city. The police department developed a training program to study organized crimes and calculate their impact on society. This approach was known as the COMPSTAT gang prevention program. The Cleveland police department created a youth gang division, which enhanced gang recognition, containment, and eradication. With government support, the gang unit has, over the years, helped reduce gang fear by the public and effective elimination of gang organizations in the community. For instance, the COMPSTAT program educates the public on the importance of not recognizing gang groups to reduce their popularity and relevance in society, thus reducing the youth pressure of being part of an infamous group (Brown et al., 2013). In Chicago, the number of gang-related crimes has been on the rise. Although loosely organized, these gangs are known to impose fear on the community. As a chief police officer in Chicago, I would use the COMPSTAT approach to educate the public on how to counteract gang threats and create public awareness in learning institutions on the implications of gang participation.
