Generation Z consists of those born between 1995 and 2010. Since they were born into the digital age and saw the rise of smartphones, Generation Z members are sometimes called “digital natives.”

Experts estimate that almost all Generation Z members will have smartphone access by now. This generation is notorious for logging excessive hours in front of their computers and mobile devices, far beyond the norms set by previous generations. On average, a member of Generation Z uses his electronic device (computer, smartphone, etc.) for three hours daily. Since many members of Generation Z saw their parents struggle financially during the Great Recession, this generation has an increased interest in financial literacy and security. As a consequence, many members of Generation Z are planning for their financial futures by setting up savings and retirement accounts and avoiding going into too much debt. Preliminary data suggests that they are dedicated workers with a high level of education who excel in professional settings. Job security, financial rewards, and workplace fairness are all things that appear to drive this generation of workers (“Generation Z,” n.d.).

As a counterpoint, 2010–2025 is often called Generation Alpha. McCrindle predicts that by the year 2100, the global population of Generation Alpha will have surpassed 2 billion people McCrindle, n.d.). Many members of this generation have grown up with their parents using tablets to view films and cell phones to listen to audiobooks and music. That may explain why experts predict Generation Alpha will have more visual learners. For this generation, having children may take a back seat to protect the earth from the effects of climate change. Parents of today’s youth may look forward to raising a generation that is more tolerant of others’ quirks and better at interacting with strangers (Cottrell, 2020).
