Communication and Influence
Part 1
Reflecting on my personal experiences concerning effective communication, I can identify situations when I had successful communication and when I failed to communicate effectively. Recently, I was appointed a leader for a community project involving coordinating teams creating youth empowerment awareness. I can say that I was successful in communicating effectively in the context of team communication. My communication across the various teams was effective because I identified various constraints considering the nature of communication, which involved team communication to enhance communication. During my meetings with team members, I ensured that I developed my agenda in a clear structure, ensuring that my comprehension was effective in both written and spoken communication. My experience on a situation where I think I failed to effectively communicate when giving a presentation in a meeting, and I can say that the reason was attributed to public speaking anxiety (Whetten & Cameron, 2002). I was presenting findings on a company report, and I think I became nervous because of limited knowledge and an increasingly demanding audience, which added pressure to communicate.
Part 2
Recently, I adopted upward influence at the workplace by persuading our business development manager to drop a marketing strategy that we felt as a marketing team was not working. I would argue that this technique is effective, and I will adopt it again because of the benefits that I feel we achieved as a team (Whetten & Cameron, 2002). After the experience, I think that the outcome was a better understanding of our business development manager concerning the effectiveness of the policies and procedures implemented within the company. The upward influence plays a key role in establishing mutual trust, feedback, and how subordinate employees perceive new policies.
