Topic 1: Vulnerable Populations

We are required to conduct research on vulnerable populations in our local communities for this week’s topic. Older people, people with low incomes, the uninsured, people experiencing homelessness, and immigrants are the groups of people I think are particularly susceptible. Chronic condition populations, such as individuals with HIV/AIDS, are another group that may be impacted. Meals on Wheels, Senior Resource Alliance, and the Department of Health are the three local organizations that may be located in my neighborhood.

Topic 2: Stigma Associated with Disease.

Stigma refers to discrimination against individuals based on different characteristics like health conditions and disabilities. Stigma negatively affects the patient and his family because they feel embarrassed and develop anxiety and depression. Due to stigma, victims may stop participating in social activities and keep to themselves. It may also lead to an economic burden for the affected person because he may stop being productive, leading to poverty. Stigma may make it challenging for the person to seek healthcare because they feel embarrassed to reveal their condition. Hence, healthcare practitioners and community leaders should eliminate stigma in the community.

In what ways would you choose to function as an advocate for vulnerable populations?

One of the methods I will use to advocate for the vulnerable population is to educate the community and create awareness. The community needs to be educated about various illnesses to help them understand that stigmatization is unnecessary. Creating awareness will allow them to gain more insight into different health conditions (Kantamneni, 2020). It will also help them understand the disadvantages of stigmatization by teaching them how it affects victims. Education is the best way to advocate for vulnerable populations and help prevent illness stigma (Kantamneni, 2020).

I will also talk to healthcare leaders and legislators to ensure people from vulnerable populations access quality and affordable healthcare. Patients from vulnerable communities with diseases that subject them to stigma may find it challenging to seek healthcare and fight the conditions that lead to stigmatization (Fischer et al., 2019). However, having access to quality and affordable healthcare can help them get the proper treatment and reduce stigmatization. It can also make it possible for patients with mental health issues that result from stigma to seek professional help. They should acquire health insurance coverage because it makes it easier for patients to seek healthcare and preventive care services (Fischer et al., 2019). Nurses are responsible for advocating for their patients. Hence, it is essential to ensure vulnerable populations are not left out.

Types of assistance to give to patients from a vulnerable population.

A 24-year-old pregnant woman who is currently homeless and unmarried.

In this case, I will help the woman settle into a shelter for accommodation. Being homeless can be dangerous because she is unmarried and does not have a home. She can live in a cave as we try to help her get a job she can work on after giving birth to support herself and her child. I will also ensure she has healthcare insurance and attends the clinic regularly. Regular checkups are necessary during pregnancy to ensure the mother and child do not develop life-threatening health conditions (Krahn et al., 2019). She will also undergo a physical examination to ensure she and the baby are healthy.

A 16-year-old girl who has run away from her foster home and who has an IV drug habit.

This patient will be put into rehabilitation to help her with the addiction. Rehabilitation helps drug addicts replace self-destructing behaviors with positive ones that promote good Health. I will look into her foster family to determine her reasons for running. If the foster parents are not safe to live with, I will work with the authorities to ensure they do not live with any children and are punished. I will also help her get into a group home to live in a stable, healthy environment.

An immigrant worker whose TB skin test just came back positive.

I will ensure the worker gets the proper medication to help him treat the TB. I will also look into his living and work conditions to check if they are safe for his condition. If not, I will help him find a less risky job to enable him to keep earning a living.

An employed married man contracted Hepatitis B through a blood transfusion 30 years ago.

I will check with the patient to ensure he takes his medication as required. I will also talk to him about the benefits of having safe sex to protect his spouse from the condition. I will also ask him to speak to his wife to get tested to be on the safer side.

NSG 4074 Week 4 Discussion

Topic 1: Vulnerable Populations

As you discovered in this week’s lectures and textbook readings, numerous vulnerable populations exist in the community.

Identify three local organizations in your community that deliver healthcare services to vulnerable populations.

Based on your research findings, answer the following:

  1. Which population does each organization serve?
  2. What services does it provide?
  3. Where is its funding (local, state, or federal sources)?
  4. Evaluate the relative value of each organization’s services to individuals and families in the vulnerable population it serves.

Topic 2: Stigma Associated with Disease

Some vulnerable populations may have diseases, health impairments, and pregnancy that bring humiliation and predisposed judgment. Unfortunately, these health conditions can cause susceptible people to become ostracized by the general public.

In what ways would you choose to function as an advocate for vulnerable populations?

Discuss the types of assistance you might provide to each of the following clients from a vulnerable population:

  • A 24-year-old pregnant woman who is currently homeless and unmarried
  • A 16-year-old girl who has run away from her foster home and who has an IV drug habit
  • An immigrant worker whose TB skin test just came back positive
  • An employed, married man who contracted Hepatitis B through a blood transfusion 30 years ago
