Implementing Best Practices
Goal setting, objective communication, and monitoring students’ processes are all important parts of the teaching process. It is important for a teacher to understand what a teaching process aims to achieve. The students need to understand the objectives of their learning as well. Using student data is important in the process of goal setting. The data helps to determine where the students are currently at in terms of their learning and the goals that they can achieve. Therefore, student data can be the basis for guiding the students’ thinking and learning.
The best way to get such data is through pre-assessments. Pre-assessment is a test that is used to determine the student’s current skills, education, and predispositions before the instruction is done. The results from the pre-assessment inform the teacher of the areas in which the students are strong and those where they are weakest (Sahin-Taskin, 2017). The data helps to determine the learning gaps that need to be addressed in the instructional planning process. Therefore, the objectives will be designed to address the areas needing the most help.
Planning for students to engage in the self-regulation cycle influences their confidence in learning independently and also helps them to take ownership of the academic process. Self-regulation skills help learners manage their thoughts and organize their learning into skills that work best for them (Schranz DrOT, 2020). Therefore, engaging students in the self-regulation cycle helps them to take better charge of their education. They get to understand the learning methods and processes that work best for them; they implement these learning methods to achieve desired outcomes.
