After completing a survey at Duke Raleigh Hospital, a group of experts noticed nurses were having a hard time focusing on their patients because they were stressed and burned out and had low resilience. After the survey was conducted, a team of experts started working on several ideas to come up with ways to improve nurses’ and other healthcare staff’s resilience. (p.41 Sextons, Hicks, Sullivan, and Adair) ‘They began by working with experts to help them better understand resilience and burnout and find tools and activities to help them strengthen resilience. After conducting the survey, a team of experts developed a process to see how they can build resilience across the organization. The goal was to prepare staff members for the change in culture and to promote safety for patients and families, and staff. One of the ideas Sextons came up with was the ” Three Good Things.” (P. 42). According to Sextons, Hicks, Sullivan, and Adair (2019) … “The Three Good Things is a simple tool for training the brain to focus on positive emotions throughout the day’. Sextons, Hicks, Sullivan, and Adair (2019). was inspired by this work and modified the exercise for use in healthcare. Sexton and Hicks also worked with the teams to cultivate positive emotions, such as awe. Feeling amazed by the world around us becomes more difficult when we’re caught up in the rush of daily activities or burned out.

Impact of Assigned Article Content on Future Practice

The impact this article will have on me in my future practice is to find ways to reduce stress and burned out. As medical professionals, we do not create time to take care of ourselves because we’re too busy working two-three jobs to make ends meet. We forget about our well-being and become stressed and burned out. I believe with teamwork and collaboration; we can help each other from being stressed and burned out. With teamwork and collaboration, we can have a better patient safety outcome. As we already know, patient safety is our number one priority as medical professionals. Because of that reason, we need to learn how to be team players to avoid stress and build resiliency. Being supportive of each other can create positivity in the workplace and reduce fewer medical errors. After reading this article, I will get together with my co-workers to find ways to continue building resiliency and come up with different activities we can do to help us in the future.

One of the ideas I liked in this article was the “TeamSTEPPS” The team steps up focus on communication, leadership, situation monitoring, and mutual support. I believe with these four steps; we can create ways to communicate regarding patient safety and concerns and recognize ways we can enhance patient safety.
