Eveline

Eveline

Life has a way of presenting humans with hard choices. Sometimes the options entail desperation to escape reality, breaking promises, and choosing the easy road. Often, the most challenging choice is always the right one. The character ‘Eveline’ in James Joyce endures a hard life in taking care of her family while dealing with her abusive father. Frank, her lover, seems like a better option because he promises a better experience. However, leaving her entire life and family to start a new one in South America looks risky since she does not know if Frank is genuine in maintaining promises. On the other hand, Eveline promised her late mother that she would care for the family. In my opinion, Eveline seems to be burdened with the role of parenting and robbed of the chance to lead her life and the freedom to explore. In this case, each option seems to rob her of an opportunity to live happily. I think Eveline should trust someone who understands her reality and help her live it. Leaving her siblings with the drunkard and abusive father is not an option, but letting go of Frank with all his promises is an option. This decision allows Eveline to meet someone who does not jeopardize her position but improves it. More so, the decision helps her focus on personal development. Escaping with Frank to a new region could be trading one problem with another that is yet unknown.

Classmates response:

The decisions we make in life always affect our future. While the decisions we make can benefit us in the present, they can also destroy our future. “Eveline” is about a young lady who recalls her memories as she sits at a home window. She recollects her life, contemplating leaving her hard life working two jobs and her abusive father. She is allowed to leave her home in Dublin and move to Buenos Aires with her important other, Frank, a sailor. However, her father disapproves of the relationship, provoking difficulty for Eveline. In the end, she was unable to choose whether to leave her life with Frank or to stay home like a devoted daughter. In my opinion, for Evelina, it was a hard decision to make. It is not easy to leave everything behind and move to another country with someone you barely know. Also, to break the promise she makes to her mother, she will take care of her brothers and sisters.
