Ethics in Business
I have worked for my current employer for the past 15 years, a Class I railroad covering most of the United States. During my time with the company, I have experienced a lot of unethical behavior from various supervisors. In their defense, their bosses have instructed the supervisor to conduct unethical behavior. The list of unethical behavior consists of changing on-duty/off-duty times, dating employees under their supervision, drinking while on duty, using the company credit card for personal use, and using the company card for personal errands, and several other instances. Their supervisors or my union have dealt with several of the models. The cases I witnessed impacted my perception of the company and the individuals. This behavior made me question the kind of people that a central railroad, which makes safety their number one, makes me ask about their hiring of these supervisors. I continue to work for the company because several supervisors have been caught and let go from the company; the supervisors I work for now are more ethical. Per our union contract, they still attempt to decline when we claim extra pay for performing duties not part of our regular work schedule. Now this may be more of an illegal act, but it is unethical because they know it is a reasonable claim but repeatedly decline it in the hopes that the individual will not file an appeal with the union.
