I agree that Universal Design for Learning (UDL) does help promote better teaching practices for all educators. The purpose of UDL is to remove any barriers to learning by incorporating different teaching methods. Educators must build flexibility into the curriculum that can be tailored to the strengths and needs of every student. This type of teaching can be helpful not only to the general classroom students but also to those in the classroom with a disability and English Language Learners. Most educators are already teaching this way and don’t realize they are doing so. For instance, UDL is based on three principles, engagement, representation, and action and expression. For engagement, a teacher might give students two options instead of only one. For representation, the teacher will give a worksheet to accompany a hands-on project. According to CAST, five great classroom ideas that a teacher can do in their room stuck out to me. The first was to post lesson goals. This simple idea helps students know what the goals are for their lessons. They can refer to those goals when the teacher begins that lesson for the day. The second idea was to assign options for the students. Instead of a typical worksheet, students can use podcasts or videos to demonstrate what they know. The teacher might even let them draw a comic strip. If students meet the lesson goals, there are plenty of options for completing assignments. The third idea was to allow the students to have flexible workspaces. Individual and small group workspaces and classrooms offer quiet spaces for individual and group work. Students who must tune out noise during independent work can wear earbuds or headphones. Next was regular feedback/check-ins. I liked this idea. Teachers may discuss lesson objectives with individual students at the end of a lesson.
Reflecting on their choices in class and whether they achieved their goals is encouraged. It is encouraged that if the goals weren’t met, they should consider what might have helped them achieve them—digital and audio text. Students have many options for reading, including printed books, digital books, audiobooks, and text-to-speech. With digital text, there is also the option of enlarging the text and changing the screen colour and contrast. There are captions for videos, as well as transcripts for audio.
Given these options, students can succeed in the classroom.
