Explain the socio-economic status and challenges of your minority groups at the turn of the century.

The economic life of African Americans revolved around cotton farming in the early 1900s. They grew the cotton under various institutional arrangements and contracts. Some African Americans were hired for specific tasks that took short periods. Most of these were renting pieces of land and some supplies and tools and paid rent at the end of the planting and harvesting season with a percentage` of their harvested crop. At this time, Black and White farm labourers and tenant farmers received the same wages and paid the same rent. However, Whites had a higher probability of owning land than Blacks (Openstax, 2019).

By the beginning of the 1900s, most Native Americans had moved to the reservation lands that the U.S. government had created for them. Some, like Ishi and his family, spent most of their years hiding from the Whites. A civilized society was viewed as the natural end outcome for all people. However, the goal of civilizing white Native Indians was not fulfilled as white, educated Native Americans collaborated with the rest in fighting for their rights to education, religion, and land in the early 1900s. The Native Indians, once hunters and gatherers, were now working in domesticated farms (Openstax, 2019).

How did the Industrial Revolution affect your chosen minority groups?

Although Blacks were mainly excluded from the growing economy in the late 19th century, they used their new freedom to participate in the proliferation of the industrial evolution’s mechanical innovations. All Northern states had, by 1820, criminalized slavery. However, the rise of cotton farms and the booming economy made the slave system accessible to southern farmers. The North and South economies were intertwined with the Southern cotton supplying raw material for the textile mills in the North. On the other hand, insurers and transporters from the North significantly played a significant role in the Southern cotton enslaved person. Thus, Blacks were soon thrust into slavery during the Industrial Revolution (Hudson, 2014).

During the Industrial Revolution, Native Indians resisted the Whites over their land acquisition and protection of their form of civilization. These were referred to as the Indian Wars, which took place in the 1850s and 1880s. The Whites propelled the wars, pushing the Natives out of their land in exchange for land reservations or individual land (Satia, 2019). However, the settlers and prospectors began to encroach on these lands regardless of the land being reservations. Consequently, the Native Indians started attacking isolated ranches, stagecoaches, and wagon trails in retaliation for the White attacks. Thus, the Industrial Revolthe Union was characterized by the displacement of the Natives from their land to reservations.

Analyze how the Progressives brought reform to your selected minority groups. Do you find that the Progressives were successful in making government reps successfully made government responsive and improved groups?

The Progressive Era brought greater government efficiency, esd an equal business playing field, and increased ordinary citizens’ political power (Ma, 2008). However, the Progressives had exclusivity in their actions. The era also coincided with the Jim Crow era. This time was characterized by intimation and segregation of Blacks. Although Blacks could now vote, go to school, and run their businesses, the facilities and services served for Blacks were always of a lesser quality than those for Whites. An example is ethanolic schools, where Black schools receive less funding than Whites (OpenStax, 2019).

Most Progressive reform efforts were with racism against Blacks and Native Americans. An example would be the suffrage movement, where women campaigned for their right to vote; most progressives at this time argued that women’s suffrage was necessary to deal with the influence that ignorant and corrupted Native and Black voters had on the elections. Hence, the progressives had little positive influence on the Blacks and Natives as it was primarily on segregation, though still, they were successful in making the government more responsive in improving the lives of the Blacks and Natives (OpenStax, 2019).
