Social Dysfunction in Native American Society
Which policies would you forward to the Secretary, who will, in the best case, eventually endorse them and forward them on to the U.S. Congress for enabling legislation and the President for signature into law?
Policies addressing dysfunctional social issues in the Native American community are essential in mitigating problems and merit attention among the different tribes. The government should develop a program that widely supports actions that facilitate the well-organized and effective distribution of resources and services to native societies. It can be achieved through education, involvement, consultation, and outreach of tribal initiatives. A primary focus of this policy is to improve the growth of inclusive tribal action planning (Townsend, 2018). The aim is to guide, direct, coordinate, and advance access for native societies. This initiative facilitates federal resources that will help establish and implement tribal action plans for stopping, intervening, and managing alcoholism, substance abuse, and domestic violence (Townsend, 2018). In this case, federal agencies should collaborate with these programs to implement the policy effectively.

In collaboration with tribal societies, federal agencies should implement and uphold policies and processes for emergency medical evaluation for Native American teenagers detained for offences associated with drug abuse and alcoholism. These policies should aim to nurture the health of Indian youths through law enforcement strategies (Townsend, 2018). The federal government should review various resources to remodel and align developing practices associated with co-occurring necessities in Indian communities (Townsend, 2018). These policies promote Saint Leo’s core principles, especially in community, personal growth, respect, and accountable stewardship. They foster a sense of belonging, interdependence, and agreement on mutual trust to develop socially responsible surrounding.
Implementing these policies is critical because, in the past, federal policies failed due to ineffectiveness. In the colonial period, native tribes attempted to restrict the sale of drugs and alcoholism within Indian boundaries. However, most of these prohibitions became ineffective because alcohol was a lucrative business commodity (Beauvais, 1998). Later, substance abuse and alcohol became a political concern when the British and French administrations allied with several native societies in exchange for alcohol (Beauvais, 1998). Reflecting on the weak outcomes of bans, legislation alone is not enough. There is a need for collaboration between federal programs, native communities, and private sectors to develop a comprehensive approach (Beauvais, 1998). Today, policies may be helpful to some degree in Indian reservations. However, they may pose difficulties in urban settings where the natives are a small portion of the population.
