Response to Harold

Hello Harold,

Thanks for letting us in on your thoughts. It is indeed a huge relief to finally come to the end of the MBA journey. A void will be created for certain because the time, energy, and focus you had put into all the classes will no longer be needed. We will all have to replace all that with something else- new energies, focus, and activities. It feels like the explosion walk, where we are the heroes who have finally made it unscathed and brought victory to ourselves and our loved ones. In the parable by Jesus, changing strategy to get better results is a move one can make:

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’” (Luke 13:6-9)

To answer your question, I have not made changes to my data collection method. I will be using questionnaires. I steered away from face-to-face interviews and focused groups because of time. These two tend to be very time consuming and require the researcher to be engaging, at a more close level, with the respondents, compared to using questionnaires. Besides, interviewees and focus group participants require a lot of redirecting; they often deviate from the topic of discussion, and getting everyone back on track is not only time-consuming but exhausting as well. I like taking an approach where the participant is given as little opportunity to deviate as possible. With that, the questionnaires I am using for my research are structured with three possible answers. There is also a section that allows participants to write in brief any other comments they wish to share. This last section will also be useful for the research as it will hopefully offer more insights providing depth and substance to the study at hand (Rakow, 2011). Lastly, using questionnaires will prevent participants from being influenced by others; instead, they can answer questions based on their experiences, perceptions, and preferences (Qu & Dumay, 2011).

This question brings several different thoughts and feelings to mind. In terms of personal development, I feel more equipped than ever to take on new projects or tasks simply based on the confidence this program has instilled in me from start to near-finish. Without question this program has improved my ability to think analytically and comprehensively as well as entertain the idea of stepping into something I know little about and learn as quickly as possible to accomplish stated goals. I know a feeling of completeness and relief will accompany completing this degree, but there will also be void, or so I’ve heard, left by this program and the time we have devoted to it over the course of the last 18+ months. It has given purpose to my days beyond work and forced me to step further away from my comfort zone and further into embracing challenges.

Regarding the primary research itself, I am transitioning from using interviews to questionnaires. The main reason for this is the time commitment. Interviews provide an opportunity to get to know the test subject on an intimate level, but also require more time to conduct the interview and transcribe it afterwards, thus limiting the amount of test subjects. In the interest of increasing my research validity, I need to increase the amount of test subjects considered for this paper. A questionnaire allows me to do that much better than an interview. I am still in the process of collecting as much data as possible to further validate the results. I wonder if any of you have had any late changes to your research such as this? Please feel free to share.

From a biblical standpoint, I have relied heavily on Jeremiah 29:11: “ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (English Standard Version). This verse brings peace to me, but I also realize that the hopeful future God has for us can often be disguised as trials and tribulations. There have been equal amounts of blessings and challenges in the last 18+ months, but I am thankful for each of them. This final step for the MBA is a big one and I will be very relieved as well as proud when it is complete.
