The social determinants of health

The social determinates of health include factors other than access to health care, such as socioeconomic status, economic stability, access to quality education, physical environment, support networks, employment, etc. Although efforts to improve healthcare within the United States usually point to responsibilities within the healthcare system, there is a growing recognition that these social determinants of health are also critical—from the individual to the population level: Writing Workshop: Option 3.

As a DNP-prepared nurse, you will consider and address the social determinants of health when working with patients. Think about the ways in which this will positively impact your patients’ experiences and outcomes, as well as the communities you serve.

The Social Determinants of Health

Importance and Value of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) for a DNP

Given the importance of social determinants of health (SDoH) to health outcomes, as well as their role in creating disparities, DNP-prepared nurses must understand how SDoH influences health and quality of life. Therefore, socioeconomic status, education, and living conditions determine patients’ access to seeing a healthcare provider, adhering to treatment and maintaining overall well-being. By addressing SDoH, nurses can address the barriers to health, improve outcomes, and extend equity (Flaubert et al., 2021). When these factors are integrated into practice, DNP-prepared nurses can target the root causes of health problems rather than disease symptoms and, in doing so, bring about long-term improvements in patient health and community well-being.

The Selected SDoH Domain and Its Significance

A domain of SDoH that has an especially important impact on individuals’ access to healthcare, nutritious food, and safe housing relates to economic stability. Many times, financial insecurity is the reason there is a delay in getting proper care, nonadherence to prescription as prescribed, or stress elevating; these all are things that can lead to poor health outcomes. This domain matches with me because I think it is the base of other determinants such as education and also access to healthcare services (White et al., 2022). Support for programs that include job training or money management can help individuals and families grow to become self-sufficient, help to reduce inequities in health and create more healthy communities.

Shifting Thinking and Practice to Address SDoH at Larger Levels

The solution for SDoH demands my shift from treating individual patients to developing community-wide and organizational-wide strategies. This includes advocating policies that promote economic stability, such as expanding affordable housing or coverage for health care (Chen et al., 2022). Collaboration with stakeholders and community organizations will be instrumental in implementing programs that provide economic assistance and opportunity to historically disadvantaged communities (Arthur et al., 2023).

In addition, employing data analysis to reveal economic inequality and measure the effectiveness of the intervention will guide evidence-based programs (Chelak & Chakole, 2023). This expanded vision will allow me to tackle systemic problems, leading to sustainable health outcomes and equity gains.
