The ENG 101 course will be essential for my personal and career growth. The ENG 105L (Critical Reading) pathway would provide the needed support to help me complete ENG 101. One of the areas where the pathway will be essential within the course is writing essays in different modes. The pathway will enable me to acquire the skills and competence needed to interpret a wide range of information across various genres to build my arguments in the essays with the course. Based on my past experiences in writing, I have identified that I have a weakness in interpreting data from different sources to create a solid argument. For example, when writing my dissertation, I had difficulty interpreting the data I would present in my literature review. I spent a lot of time working on the corrections suggested by my supervisor on the literature review section limiting the time to handle other sections in the dissertation. Therefore, I will use the knowledge I gather from the ENG 105L (Critical Reading) pathway to improve my data interpretation skills and present high-quality written reports in my academic and professional life. I will also use the knowledge from the pathway to enhance my performance in ENG 101, thus boosting my overall academic performance.

Interpreting data gathered from the research participants while writing my dissertation created a foundation for improving my data interpretation skills because it enabled me to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I realized that I am good at evaluating and interpreting raw statistical data but not at interpreting and evaluating raw non-statistical data such as interview responses. Therefore, I need to pay more attention to the ENG 105L (Critical Reading) pathway because it would allow me to interpret and evaluate examples of different types of texts, including web-based, print and visual texts, thus improving my data interpretation and evaluation skills. I can use the skills to complete various assignments in the ENG 101 course, such as written essays that require data from multiple sources to support my arguments. Therefore, I will be keen on practical data interpretation and evaluation examples in the pathway. I would also use the information gathered in the pathway about using different strategies to interpret, analyze, and comprehend data to improve my interpretation and evaluation capabilities.

The second area where the ENG 105L (Critical Reading) pathway would provide the needed support to help me successfully complete ENG 101 is distinguishing between interpretive and literal meanings, thus increasing my critical thinking skills. Writing persuasive essays requires critical thinking to determine the most convincing arguments and where they should be positioned within the essay. Critical thinking is also essential in my profession because I am required to submit reports on the implementation of various plans within the organization. For example, when the organization was planning to expand into a new market, I was requested to provide a report on the most appropriate market with supporting evidence. I used my critical thinking skills to write a convincing report, but my recommendation was not selected because it did not convince some executive leaders. Therefore, I would like to improve my critical thinking skills and learn how to apply them in writing through the ENG 105L (Critical Reading) pathway and ENG 101 Composition I. I will use the ENG 101 assignment scores to monitor my progress in developing critical thinking skills.
