Working with Involuntary and Mandated Clients

Working with Involuntary and Mandated Clients

This information can help me deal with involuntary or mandated clients as a social worker. I will be able to use the suggested techniques and watch out for the possible challenges and hence be prepared to handle them in the best possible way. I can use this information by ensuring that working with a mandated client is as collaborative as possible while maintaining their autonomy to help lessen resistance.

I have learned that one of the best ways to deal with involuntary or mandated clients is to use motivational interviewing. To effectively use this technique, it would be essential to use core listening skills such as summarizations, open questions, reflections, and affirmations. Such principles as expressing empathy, supporting self-efficacy, rolling with resistance, and developing discrepancy are also crucial while working with involuntary or mandated clients. It is essential to emphasize the autonomy of the client, collaborate with them (or make it known to them that they are part of the process and the solution can be obtained collaboratively), and make use of evocation, where the practitioner strives to make the client find out the reasons for the necessitated change.

One of the benefits associated with working with involuntary or mandated clients is that when the practitioner uses a motivational technique, they receive feedback regarding the approach’s feedback almost immediately, enabling the practitioner to shift or continue with the strategy used. The high resistance rate is the major challenge of working with involuntary or mandated clients. However, this resistance can be reduced by emphasizing the client’s needs and their freedom of personal control and choice (Pathlore, n.d).
