How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?

In the first meeting, the attendees presented different opinions, with some escalating into arguments. A WBS would be very helpful in resolving these problems. It is a very important tool in project management as it helps identify all the tasks in the project and provides a general overview of the project (Larson & Gray, 2017).

Preparing a WBS for the project would be beneficial to Nicolette in that:

  1. There would be clarity on the project direction
  2. It would help save time by eliminating lengthy discussions and deviation from the project’s goals.
  3. It would make assigning tasks and responsibilities to the project team easier as the tasks are clearly defined and categorized.

Where can Nicolette find additional information to help her develop a WBS for the tournament?

Nicolette can source additional information for developing the WBS from various sources, including:

  1. Brainstorm with her colleagues about the tournament. The process of brainstorming involves the intellectual and physical presence of a group, with group members presenting varying ideas for the decision-maker to select the best idea (Khan, 2013).
  2. Contact other football tournament organizers who have successfully organized such a tournament. Information from other tournament organizers would be very beneficial as they can give insights on the tournament’s various aspects and estimated costs.
  3. Source information from an already developed WBS for a previously organized football tournament. An already prepared and implemented WBS would offer great insights into the hierarchical breakdown of tasks associated with such a tournament.

How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates for the tournament? Why would this be useful information?

A WBS is a great framework for generating project cost estimates and tracking project costs (Larson & Gray, 2017). Nicolette and her task force can assign individual costs to each smaller task (Level 3) and sum the tasks into an overall project cost estimate.

Calculating the cost estimate for the project would be very helpful in:

  1. Sourcing for sponsorship funds. An estimate of the associated project cost would help the project team decide on the best corporate sponsor to approach to fund the tournament.
  2. Making decisions on the cost aspects of some of the project’s tasks like the type of rewards for the tournament winners. With a cost estimate, the project team can decide which tasks they can cut back on, which tasks they can eliminate, and which to include.
  3. Setting the budget limits for the various project tasks. The project team can compare the generated project cost estimate with the tournament budget to help in allocating the budget to the various major deliverables.

The purpose of this assignment is to create a work breakdown structure (WBS) for a given project. Specifically, complete Case 4.1: Manchester United Soccer Club in Larson and Gray.

In addition to the items requested for Question 1 in the case, complete the following for Question 1 using Microsoft Project:
