What I found interesting about the writings of Julian of Norwich
One of the things that I found interesting about the writing of Julian of Norwich is the consistency in the depiction of mysticism, which focuses on reaching a state of unique closeness with God and having a solid relationship with Him. Therefore, a mystic is a person who adapts a prayer life aimed at moving closer to God, often exhibiting unique gifts such as direct revelations of the will of God and visions. Julian’s work depicted her closeness to God based on her interpretation of her visions and aligning them with biblical teachings. For example, in “A Revelation of Love,” she engages in complex and abstract theological thinking on the Trinity’s constitution and the reality of sin. She focuses on the passion of Christ in the book to bring her thoughts by imagining positioning herself at Christ’s crucifixion scene to experience the same suffering as Christ. She also reconstructs the trinity model to depict Christ’s self-sacrifice and unconditional love for humanity.
The second thing I found interesting in Julian of Norwich’s writings was the clarity in her description of events and thoughts and the sentence structures despite the claim that she was illiterate. She not only includes theological writing in the description of her vision and encounters but also uses images that readers can relate to, thus making it easy to understand the content of the writings. According to Greenblatt (17), Julian’s writings are in English vocabulary. However, she can still develop the serenity and penetration of her writings by creating a picture in the reader’s mind through vivid descriptions. It was also interesting to see how Julian’s writings revealed her personality. She made an image of a woman who could endure suffering for a good cause and used her writings to stand out in a society where women’s writings were not appreciated.
