Welfare – The Never-ending Debate

Welfare – The Never-ending Debate

How should the government promote “the general welfare”?

The Constitution grants the federal government power to protect and promote all Americans’ general welfare (Gerisch, 2020). One way the government should do so is by providing quality, affordable health care to protect the health of all citizens. Other means include improving transportation, protecting the environment, promoting agriculture, and solving socioeconomic problems.

What welfare programs should exist?

Since the promotion of general welfare includes all citizens, welfare programs such as Medicare and Medicaid ought to cover all Americans without favoring or discriminating against anyone.

Who should benefit?

As earlier stated, all Americans should benefit from welfare programs. Although those declared disabled, elderly, and low-income individuals and families are covered under Obamacare (Bauchner, 2017), a basic level of healthcare insurance should be available to all Americans.

What role should the federal government play relative to the states?

The federal government is responsible for protecting all the country’s citizens. Therefore, it should ensure a basic level of universal health care is accessible to all Americans, as is the case in most nations around the globe (HSBC, 2021). Additionally, it should regulate the state policies to ensure disparities in health care provision do not occur.

Is it a government role at all?

The American healthcare system is notoriously expensive because it is designed to promote insurance rather than health. The federal government has the responsibility to amend the system to pro-health (Gerisch, 2020). So yes, it is the government’s role to alleviate suffering rather than promote a system that thrives on the suffering of American citizens.
