Week 8 Reflection

Week 8 Reflection

Reflection on Learning

Throughout the course, I have learned valuable lessons aligning with Program Outcome 5: Advocate for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. The lesson assignments, especially those on health promotion and disease prevention, emphasized that a holistic approach to patient care is an extremely vital unit in healthcare. By reviewing evidence-based guidelines, I have learned how to formulate appropriate management plans for individualized patient needs. Also, while working on the case studies we were assigned, I had the chance to develop health promotion and disease prevention interventions for different populations across the lifecycle. This process helped me build solid knowledge about the best use of evidence and collaboration in providing optimal outcomes for my patients.

Discussions of the numerous ethical dilemmas in nursing practice have also helped me grow significantly. Reflection with my peers has helped bring various perspectives to appreciation and the importance of demonstrating compassionate care. I have realized that an understanding of ethical frameworks is central to supporting patient and family advocacy by giving voice to them in decisions pertaining to them. This is in line with the program outcome, which addresses the promotion of positive health outcomes. It demands not only clinical competency but also empathetic and ethical practice awareness.

AACN Essentials Domain 9 Competency

One of the advanced-level competencies from the AACN Essentials Domain 9 that I plan to work on is 9.3m: Advocate for policies/practices that promote social justice and health equity. Specific assignments around analyzing current health policies and their impact on vulnerable populations more clearly framed my understanding of social justice in health. I realized that disparities in health are usually related to social determinants, and as nurses, we should be able to leverage for policies that would result in such disparities.

The course activities, whether through group projects or presentations, further honed my skill to communicate the relevance of health equity to my future colleagues or peers. We were able to think of ideas collectively for strategies that could be implemented in each of our respective practice settings to promote equal access to health care. I will ensure that evidence-based practices are followed and policies enacted, which include all manner of inclusivity so that quality patient care is not dependent upon patient socioeconomic status. This has prepared me to play an active role in any advocacy opportunity that leads to the breakdown of systemic barriers in healthcare.

NONPF Independent Practice Competency

The NONPF Competency on which I will focus from an independent practice perspective is NP 2.9k: Implement evidence-based guidelines and strategies that enable effective transitions of care and care coordination. Care coordination provides integrated and coordinated care along the continuum of the patient’s health care journey (Karam et al., 2021; Khatri et al., 2023). We reviewed evidence-based guidelines for ensuring smooth transitions between various care settings, which were important for patients with chronic disease processes or with complex health needs.

The assignment entitled Care Coordination that I worked on involved developing a plan of care for a patient transitioning from the hospital to home care. This exercise pointed at the importance of communication among members of an interdisciplinary team and made clear that a patient-centered approach is necessary. I will continuously follow my studies and clinical practice by utilizing the aforementioned skills, ensuring transitions in the delivery of care are without obstacles, effective, and appropriate for the given patient. Through evidence-based strategies, I will try to enhance patient outcomes and further improve the quality of care provided.

Conclusion

This course has contributed to my professional development toward being a future family nurse practitioner. Through reflective inquiry, I have developed a more critical understanding of the importance of advocacy, collaboration, and ethical decision-making in nursing practice. The knowledge and skills I have acquired will enable me to contribute effectively toward taking care of patients and becoming an advocate for health equity and social justice in my future practice. Moving on, I am committed to the principles of compassion, and evidence-based nursing that prioritize the well-being of patients and families across the lifespan.
