Week 8: Discussion Question – Reflection in Action Video Journal 2
Hello. My name is Lovella Delos Santos from Riverside, CA. I am currently pursuing an MSN-FNP program at USU. First, the FNP program accords me an opportunity to provide healthcare across all demographic groups: Week 8: Discussion Question – Reflection in Action Video Journal 2.
As a believer in expanded access to healthcare, I believe the program is not only aligned with my personal and professional goals but also a perpetuation of the resolve to ensure all communities can receive high-quality care, as embodied in the American Healthcare goals,
My life experiences have considerably informed my career choices and path toward the MSN-FNP program. Growing up in mixed-socioeconomic settings, I got to face the realities of healthcare compromises and apparent challenges to enhanced access to healthcare, prominent in American communities. Entering mid-school and tertiary education, I witnessed how diverse American communities are affected by chronic illnesses and recently emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. While the health impacts of these illnesses are well understood, the resolve to curtail them resonates in my consciousness and pushes me to play an active role in managing and preventing them.
My ADN and Bachelor’s programs at San Joaquin Valley College in Ontario, CA, and Capella University imparted to me the foundational skills required to address presenting healthcare challenges. I have also worked as an Aesthetic nurse for two years and am a licensed Esthetician for 8 years. I have also worked as an Emergency Nurse at Parkview Community Hospital for a year. These experiences cement the foundational knowledge in nursing and have imparted the prerequisite interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills integral to FNP’s professional roles and clinical care.
My educational journey and early career remain the highlights of my academic and professional journey. Notably, the academic journey through the undergraduate level remains a daunting task. The level presents difficulty to learners, who often require hard work and the tenacity to conquer.
My greatest success is in my professional roles as an Aesthetic Nurse and Emergency Nurse at Parkview Community Hospital. As an aesthetic nurse, I excelled in the role and was able to perform exemplarily in skin care treatment and Botox and fillers. As an Emergency Nurse, I appreciated the significance of fundamental nursing skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking in managing competing clinical challenges.
My academic and professional journey has not been short of challenges. To begin with, managing cross-cultural patients was, through a large part of my early career, an uphill task. However, by continuously educating myself on cross-cultural communication and best practices in handling diverse patient groups, I have been able to bolster my skills.
I am currently confident when addressing different patient groups. Work-life balance is another area I struggled with early in my career. Being passionate about my role as a Nurse got me focusing more on my career at the expense of my personal life. I have since learned to allocate some time for my hobbies, such as playing chess.
The MSN-FNP course focuses on providing nursing care to all patient groups. The course has expanded my capacity to provide care to diverse patients by equipping me with the prerequisite nursing skills necessary for disease prevention, health promotion, and management of chronic illnesses. My passion for learning new things has driven me to acquire valuable personal and interpersonal skills necessary for nursing engagements. Through online learning and sustained reading on various aspects of healthcare, I have acquired excellent leadership skills, problem-solving capabilities, and healthcare communications.
My goal is to increase my scope of practice by doing advanced nursing. With expanded nursing roles, I will not only be able to practice independently but also provide high-quality nursing care to my patients. This way, I will also be able to establish new and exciting services in my business, increase my participation in health promotion and disease prevention, and positively impact the communities I serve.
In an ever-changing healthcare landscape, advanced practice nursing provides an opportunity for expanded and sustained nursing involvement in clinical decision-making roles. I believe that by pursuing the program, I am not only better placed to effect valuable changes in the clinical world but also contribute to the resolve to address apparent disparities in accessing healthcare in the country.
Thank you.
