Wealth Inequality
Hello Socrates, it is nice to meet you too. To better understand this world, one major thing that I would like to point out that, in my opinion, requires changing is wealth inequality. As of last year, 1% of the richest people in the world owned approximately half of the global wealth (Mlaba, 2023). This fact never seizes to shock me whenever it comes to mind: Wealth Inequality.
There are over eight billion people in the world, and half of the wealth is in the hands of a few people. Marx argues that wealth inequality is an indication that society is riddled with exploitative tactics, whereby the labor of the working class is not being compensated as deserved; instead, capitalists pocket most of the profits and pay them less.
Aristotle also argued against wealth inequality by stating that an imbalance in wealth distribution disrupts the needed balance for eudaimonia (Dhiman, 2020). With all the wealth being concentrated in one small place, there are two extremes, one being excess while the other being total deficiency. Aristotle’s theory of the Golden Mean is applicable here because there are two extremes, extreme wealth and extreme poverty, which disrupt the balance needed for society to flourish. In addition, wealth inequality brings about inequality in other aspects of life, like education, healthcare, and housing, especially in a capitalist society. Not only does wealth inequality perpetuate social inequalities but also limits upward mobility.
Another individual who talked about wealth inequality is James Baldwin. He notes that the only way that the rich can continue staying rich is by exploiting the poor through tactics like creating racial division. This weakens the working class in a way that they cannot fight back and bring back balance.
Lastly, it is worth noting that the two extremes created by wealth inequality violate the principles of what is considered fair. In a just society, everyone is treated equally and afforded equal opportunities to thrive and afford basic needs; however, I think that those at the top prevent equality, which is immoral and goes against humanity.
