Voter ID- Liberal vs. Conservative
In an opinion column dated July 2021, Senator Aument of Lancaster County writes about his perspective on voter ID. Accordingly, Senator Aument argues that voter ID requirement during elections is a measure to increase election integrity by strengthening the security of the election, increasing the voter turnout, and also boosting the public’s confidence in the elections (S., Brigitte. Para, 1). Secondly, the senator argues that implementing voter ID requirements policies are in the public’s interest. To support this argument, he quotes a study that showed that approximately 74% of Pennsylvania’s citizens favored the voter ID requirement (S., Brigitte. Para 5). Further, the column also contains statistics that show that, as opposed to what liberals claim, voter ID requirements do not have a significant impact on voter turnout. In fact, the senator claims that in Georgia, the implementation of voter ID had the opposite effect as voter turnout increased. Senator Aument concludes by claiming the liberal defense is nothing but politics and that voter ID would play a huge role in the election’s integrity.
In a liberal opinion column, the author discredits the conservative’s argument that voter ID ensures election integrity. Accordingly, the author highlights a study conducted in 2014 of over a billion ballot votes cast between 2000 and 2014. The study showed that from the over billion votes, only 31 cases were found (Indivisible, para 6). As such, the argument for election integrity is baseless. Secondly, the author highlights how voter ID has been designed to discriminate against certain groups of people. The requirement for obtaining a voter ID varies from state to state. However, the requirements include documentation like citizenship papers, proof of residency, birth certificates, and social security cards, just to name a few (Indivisible, para 11). Many people cannot meet these requirements for various reasons, such as loss of documents and homelessness. The author also argues how expensive the process of obtaining a voter ID can be, which only adds to the barriers against millions of people trying to obtain a voter ID just so they can vote.
The part of the Constitution at issue here is the twenty-sixth Amendment section, which guarantees all American citizens who are adults the freedom to vote with no restrictions (Krutz, Glen, and Sylvie, 57). Therefore, when voter IDs are unavailable to all American citizens, their constitutional rights are being violated outright. The liberal policy of no voter ID requirements is the best because it violates people’s voting rights and serves no positive purpose (election integrity does it require them).
