Values And Ethics Required to Being a Successful Human Services Practitioner

Explain the values you have that will serve as a foundation that will assist you in being a successful human services practitioner.

Values play a vital role in shaping a person’s choices in their personal and professional lives (Nedelko & Brzozowski, 2017). The main values that will serve as a foundation that I can use to become a successful human service practitioner are respect for others, being responsible, having a sense of personal accomplishment, helping or serving others, and leaving the world a better place. These values are essential in maintaining professionalism and dealing with ethical challenges I may encounter when offering human services.

Explain your most important values and why they are meaningful.

My most important values are a sense of personal accomplishment and being responsible. According to Berlinger (2019), healthcare professionals experience uncertainty in determining how to help undocumented patients because they may have to overlook some laws. Therefore, a sense of personal accomplishment is meaningful to me because, as a human services practitioner, I need resilience to help me deal with situations where I may receive backlash from the community and colleagues for helping undocumented patients. Being responsible is meaningful to me because I feel obligated to use my expertise to help people live better lives.

Explain any challenges you anticipate regarding your values and ethics as a human services practitioner.

The main challenge I might experience regarding a sense of personal accomplishment is burnout, which may arise from serving many clients and vulnerable groups in the community. The main challenge I might experience regarding responsibility is an extended scope of practice. For example, I may be required to coordinate care with other healthcare providers to ensure my clients get the needed services. The main ethical challenge I anticipate regarding having responsibility and a sense of accomplishment is conflicts of interest as I pursue career growth opportunities while maintaining responsibility to my clients.

Explain how you might address those challenges.

I would address the challenge of emotional drain by using burnout coping strategies such as meditation and regular physical exercise. I might address the challenge of an extended scope of practice by maintaining professionalism and partnering with other human service practitioners in my area of practice. I might address the challenge of conflicts of interest by ensuring that my actions align with the human service practitioners’ code of ethics and the policies and procedures in my workplace.
