The Chosen Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of psychotherapeutic intervention that adheres basically to the alteration of unhealthy patterns of thought, belief, and behavior. CBT draws upon the theoretical foundations of cognition and behavior, with an emphasis on well-established, goal-set sessions for the alleviation of emotional pain and maladaptive behavior (Franklin & Jordan, 2024). CBT can potentially successfully treat anxiety, depression, traumatic states, and behavioral problems, most significantly with adolescents: Using Research to Select a Therapeutic Modality: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Methodological Context
The study by Zhou et al. (2025) utilized the systematic review and meta-analysis approach in the investigation of the effectiveness of CBT with anxious adolescents. Researchers screened several databases (such as CENTRAL, PSDC, and PsycINFO) and aggregated 61 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of adolescents less than 19. Standardized symptom scales of anxiety and inactive control conditions, such as waitlists, were also used for the sake of compiling the data. Meta-regression was also implemented by the research with the aim of exploring the degree to which elements predicted the endpoints.
Applicability of Findings to Ella Schultz
The findings are particularly pertinent to the case of Ella. CBT focuses on the challenge of maladaptive thinking, and the acquisition of coping strategies is congruent with her stage of development. The research lends support for the use of CBT with reduced symptomology of anxiety in adolescents, a pertinent consideration with Ella’s symptom profile involving a history of abuse, homelessness, and dysfunctional family life. CBT can be adapted with a strongly structured framework for the treatment of Ella’s abuse and identity problems.
Use of Therapy and Justification
I would use CBT for Ella Schultz because it is congruent with social work values, enhances empowerment, and is flexible across cultures. CBT’s structured approach can treat Ella’s trauma and assist her with the development of cognitive strength and emotional control. CBT is a structured, ethical, and client-focused intervention that enhances significant personal growth and responsibility (Xie et al., 2024). It also respects her autonomy, accommodates her bisexual orientation, and is congruent with her stage of development.

Theory helps inform the evidence-based practice process that should guide social workers’ practice.
