United States Navy Retirement Policy
Retirement is part of every employee’s career path. Many organizations have a retirement policy outlining the retirement age and retirement benefits. For instance, my former employer, the United States Navy, has a clear retirement policy that applies to all members of the United States Navy. The policy indicates that all regular commissioned navy officers in grades below the flag and general officers should retire at 62 years. The retirement age for permanent professors in the academics section of the Navy and regular commissioned officers in the flag and general officer retire at 64 years, and warrant officers retire at 62 years. Navy officers may also be forced to retire if they do not meet performance expectations (Werner, 2018). However, this mainly applies to senior commanders and captains.
Navy officers are entitled to retirement benefits after retirement. One of the benefits is retirement pay. All retired United States Navy members receive 50% of their basic salary after retirement. Other retirement benefits include readjustment counseling, federal hiring preference, free legal assistance, career and educational counseling, home loans, medical benefits, disability compensation, and burial allowance. However, the retirement pay and benefits are only awarded to veterans who served during the war and Navy members who were not dishonorably discharged. The United States Navy also considers the High 36 or Legacy retirement system and the blended retirement system to determine the retirement benefits a retired Navy Seal should be awarded. The High 36 or Legacy retirement system is based on an average of the Navy Seal’s highest basic pay within 36 months. Consequently, the blended retirement system matches the Navy Seal’s contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan.
