Title: Guitar and Wine Glass

Pablo Picasso’s Guitar and Wine Glass is a collage crafted using different papers, cut, and painted on wallpaper. The collage depicts aspects of Analytic Cubism, often illustrated by a café table with musical instruments, drinks, and newspapers: Unit V Collage Discussion.

At the bottom left of the collage is a piece of a newspaper with the words “LE JOU,” and below it, the headline translates to “the battle has begun.” The headline was captured during the Balkan War (Cramer & Grant, 2025). However, the stylistic choice to cut off part of the title portrays the rivalry between Picasso and Braque, both Analytic Cubist painters.

A guitar is crafted from brown paper that resembles wood, blue paper, and white circular paper with string-like shading, giving the art a guitar-like appearance. Beside it is a printed sheet of music, providing the illusion of music produced by the musical instrument.

On the lower right side of the collage is a scribbled painting of a glass on white paper. The glass has been drawn with charcoal, giving it an effective view of its parts from the top, side, and bottom. The black paper shows part of the table where the wine glass and the guitar are positioned (Glennon, 1993).

Picasso’s Guitar and Wine Glass is an exhibition of the artist’s creativity. Picasso captures and portrays the evolution of existing Cubist techniques. The artist also crafted the collage to outdo Braque’s Fruit Dish and Glass collage, promoting competition in artistic work (Cramer & Grant, 2025).

Unlike past Cubist techniques, Picasso incorporates different colors, making his work more appealing compared to the black-and-white collages. Picasso features the culture and politics of the era based on his selection of materials.
