Understanding Our Minds

Understanding Our Minds

A woman named Anne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was put on a medication that mimicked dopamine. The medication cleared all her symptoms but came with a side effect that got her addicted to gambling due to the active dopamine neurons. Gambling became so important to her that she stole money to continue gambling and went days without sleeping just to keep gambling. She couldn’t stop gambling, leading to her divorce and loss of money, totaling up to at least 300,000 dollars. After she got off the medication, the gambling stopped, but the Parkinson’s symptoms manifested themselves.

Cartesian dualists and behaviorists would say her radical transformation was attributed to sensations influenced by dopamine. With the medication that mimicked dopamine, the function of dopamine neurons in the woman’s brain was accelerated, resulting in the uncontrolled desire to find patterns in her gambling activities. Subsequently, dualists would say we should focus on the effects the drug was having on her brain due to the excitement of finding patterns while gambling. Behaviorists would attribute the changes in her behavior to the uncontrolled desire to find patterns in gambling activities that would yield a good feeling in her brain. It is a belief that dualists and behaviorists would say that we had to look at and discuss the changes in behavior and trace the source of the changes. Accordingly, some behavioral changes can be attributed to improving our health and making our lives easier. Hence, we should question significant behavioral changes.
