Understanding Organizational Culture- Insights from SLP

In your opinion, do the Gallup results fit your general expectations or constitute a surprise in some ways? Interpret the results of the Gallup survey in terms of your own experience, either to confirm or to question the results. Compare the Gallup results and your opinions with the McNamara categories.

The Gallup results surprise me particularly due to the argument that there are no great companies and that only great workgroups exist. This was a surprise because I have always believed that great companies exist based on the Forbes rankings and my research on the best companies to work for. I base my argument on concluding that a company is great based on its profit margins, work environment, market share, and salaries. In my opinion, great companies are what make great workgroups. For instance, a company that is able to motivate its employees through high wages, benefits, and incentives will create a productive workforce, thus creating a great workgroup. It was, therefore, surprising to learn that a company’s greatness is defined by the employees’ ability to know that the workplace is great (People Group, Based on Gallup Research: What Makes a Great Workplace? 2008). McNamara suggests that the success of an organization is dictated by the organization’s culture, while Gallup suggests that it is influenced by the behavior of the workgroups (McNamara, 2000). This behavior is, however, regulated by the attitude of managers towards the employees and setting realistic expectations.

The degree to which the Gallup results and the McNamara information tell you similar or dissimilar things about your organization.

The two documents recognize that employees are an important part of the organization and that it is important to maintain a good relationship between employees and management. They acknowledge that the role of management is to set the direction that needs to be followed by creating rules and setting goals that need to be achieved. This tells me that my organization is headed towards becoming a great company because it not only focuses on creating a conducive work environment but also adopting an organizational culture that facilitates growth and collaboration among employees and management.

Does the Gallup survey and the McNamara categories help improve your managerial understanding and/or skills? What can you infer from the results about how your organization’s culture fits or doesn’t fit with you? What (if anything) can you do to make your interaction with the culture more effective?

The Gallup survey and the McNamara categories help in improving my managerial understanding in different ways. For instance, the Gallup survey enlightened me on my role as a manager in supporting employees to ensure that they positively contribute to the company’s success. It also enlightens me on my managerial role in setting the direction that employees should follow by creating expectations and monitoring employee behavior to ensure that it focuses on meeting the organization’s expectations and not meeting personal needs. The McNamara categories enlightened me on my managerial rule in creating an effective organizational culture by considering who should be accepted to be part of the organization’s workforce, the kinds of behaviors to be rewarded, the things I should pay attention to as a manager, and how to make decisions. The categories also enlighten me on the strategies I can use to influence my organization’s culture, such as emphasizing what is important, rewarding employees whose conduct reflects what is important, discouraging behaviors that do not reflect what is important, and modeling the behaviors that I want to see in the workplace. Based on the results of the two studies, I can infer that our organization’s culture fits with me because it facilitates teamwork which is the main managerial approach I use. I can, however, make my interaction with the culture more effective by delegating the team’s leadership to one of the employees to avoid creating reluctance among the employees to provide suggestions due to the fear that I may be displeased with their comments and take disciplinary action against them.

Provide your opinion on whether or not the above two sources in this SLP 4 help you understand the organization and how you cope with it. Do they accurately depict what is needed to analyze a company’s culture?

In my opinion, the Gallup survey and the McNamara categories help me understand the organization and how I cope with it by outlining the basic functional areas that contribute to better organizational management. They also accurately depict what is required to analyze the organization’s culture, hence making them reliable sources of information on organizational culture.

Module 4 – SLP
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND CULTURE
For the SLP 4 assignment, you will explore some aspects of an organization’s culture, at least as you see it. (Select an organization you have worked with, if possible.) Since the concept of organizational culture is open to many interpretations and classifications, this assessment offers a slightly different approach from your background reading on organizational culture.
