Understanding Biotic and Abiotic Factors- A Case Study of the Temperate Rainforest Biome

The earth comprises ecosystems with both abiotic and biotic factors. Abiotic factors are the nonliving elements of an ecosystem, such as temperature and water, while biotic factors are the living elements of an ecosystem, such as animals and plants (Simon, Dickey, Reece, and Burton, 2019). In an ecosystem, these factors are interdependent, implying that they rely on each other; for instance, animals and plants need water for life. Accordingly, this relationship can be elaborated in various biomes: life zones, aquatic or terrestrial, comprising of various biotic factors, vegetation, and abiotic factors, climate.

One ecosystem biome is the terrestrial biome. The terrestrial biome consists of savanna, desert, and tropical forest, amongst others. From these constitutions of a terrestrial biome, biotic and abiotic factors are significant in the biodiversity of the biome. Furthermore, climate, including temperature, is an abiotic factor that influences the biotic factors, living organisms found in a biome. For instance, abiotic factors influencing biotic factors include warm temperatures and rainfall consistency in tropical forests. The biotic factors being influenced include trees with canopies and orchids, which grow on tall tree parts to obtain sunlight.

Accordingly, the purpose of biotic and abiotic factors in sustaining life is illustrated. Subsequently, considering the biotic and abiotic factors in a tropical forest, it is evident that consistent rainfall and sunlight, abiotic factors, are essential to sustain life, especially for photosynthesis, the process by which plants make their food. The biotic factors, in this case, are plants, trees, and orchids; without the abiotic factors, these plants would wilt and die.

In conclusion, biotic and abiotic factors are all essential in the biomes of an ecosystem to sustain life. Despite the fact that biotic factors are the living organisms of an ecosystem, including plants and animals, they require abiotic factors, including water and temperature, to sustain their lives.
