Two Sides, One Issue – A Comprehensive Review of Mandatory Vaccination
Issue: Mandatory Vaccination
Aspect 1: Public Health
Pro: Odone, A., Dallagiacoma, G., Frascella, B., Signorelli, C., & Leask, J. (2021). Current understandings of the impact of mandatory vaccination laws in Europe. Expert Review of Vaccines, 20(5), 559–575. https://doi.org/10.1080/14760584.2021.1912603
The authors analyze the impacts of mandatory vaccination on collective public health. Collective public health presents a backbone for the argument that mandatory vaccinations should not be contended as communities are safeguarded from vaccine refusal and the resurgence of outbreaks, amongst many other factors. Childhood immunizations and diseases preventable by vaccines are other aspects the authors cover.

BMJ Global Health, 7(5), e008684. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjgh-2022-008684
The authors present the negative impacts mandatory vaccination has on many aspects of society including public health. Their arguments center on the impacts of COVID-19 vaccination, which is the most recent pandemic that paralyzed the world. They position that the integrity of public health and people’s trust in the same is questioned as reluctance for future policies or measures increases.
Aspect 2: Ethical Aspects
Pro: Savulescu, J., Giubilini, A., & Danchin, M. (2021). Global ethical considerations regarding mandatory vaccination in children. The Journal of, 231, 10–16. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpeds.2021.01.021
The authors stipulate that mandatory vaccinations are supported ethically for several reasons. First, based on the threat to public health. The greater the threat to public health a disease poses the more justifiable mandatory vaccine becomes. Second, based on the efficiency of the vaccine being mandated. The more efficient the vaccine is, the more justifiable the mandatory vaccine.
Con: Giubilini, A. (2020). Vaccination ethics. British Medical Bulletin, 137(1), 4–12. https://doi.org/10.1093/bmb/ldaa036
The author positions that mandatory vaccination presents ethical issues in terms of moral duty to a community and human rights, which are individual. The purpose of vaccines is to promote health by presenting harm, but mandating them presents a form of coercion that infringes on individual human rights. The ethical issues are thereby impacted by the responsibilities of everyone in society.
Aspect 3: Cost-Benefit Profile
Pro: Cheng, F. K. (2022). Debate on mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. Ethics, Medicine and Public Health, 21, 100761. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jemep.2022.100761
The author presents a case where mandatory vaccination impacts vary, with some being negative. Factors such as the cost-benefit profile of a vaccine help establish its mandate. In the case of mandatory vaccination, the benefit is the protection of the general public to ensure their well-being, while the cost is the mandate, which, in specific cases, infringes on individual rights.
Con: Williams, B. M. (2021). The ethics of selective mandatory vaccination for COVID-19. Public Health Ethics, 15(1), 74–86. https://doi.org/10.1093/phe/phab028
The author states that the cost-benefit profile for mandatory vaccination varies with individuals in society. There are higher and lower costs based on the threat posed on an individual, which depends on age in many cases. Consistently, the threat posed to the general public varies and the cost-benefit profile presented for a mandated vaccine may not be guaranteed.

Introduction
This week you continue to work on your paper that addresses a current controversial issue. This paper is to be in the form of an argument. You have selected a topic and chosen issues related to that topic; this week, you will thoroughly research both sides of the issues you have chosen. Keep in mind that your paper must define the issue, present evidence on both sides of the issue, and then argue that one side is stronger and more persuasive than the other. Your paper must address at least three relevant aspects of the issue. More specific directions for each part of the paper will be found within the specific assignment in the weekly modules; the assignment this week is to research both the pro and con sides of the issues you have chosen to address.
